Annual Quality Statements are an opportunity for Health Boards in Wales to provide assurances in a clear and accessible way to older people across Wales about the safety, effectiveness, dignity and compassion within the healthcare they receive.

The Commissioner has considered the extent to which these documents are successfully communicating with and providing assurances to older people. While there is will always be room for continuing development, it is clear that there is a positive direction of travel and that the feedback provided to Health Boards on their 2013/14 AQSs has been used in a positive and constructive way.

The Commissioner welcomes the fact that a number of AQSs refer to Health Boards’ commitment to improved outcomes based reporting (on areas of particular relevance to older people such as continence, hydration and falls) at their Board meetings and within their AQS.

The Commissioner is also pleased that a number of Health Boards have begun reporting on the quality of care of older people in care homes following her Care Home Review.
