Statement: Shielding vulnerable citizens from coronavirus
Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Heléna Herklots CBE, said:
"The government's announcement that 70,000 citizens in Wales will be included as part of a ‘shielding group’ in order to protect them from the coronavirus is an important measure, but will cause great concern for many older people and those who are vulnerable.
"It’s therefore crucial that the government provides people in this group with the detailed information and guidance they will need to help them stay well, as well as assurance that they will still receive the care and support they need, will be able to access essential supplies, and will be able to stay connected with their family and friends.
"But to ensure that this group is safe, it’s also crucial that the wider population follows government advice on social distancing to manage the spread of the virus as much as possible. Scenes from the weekend that showed people crowding together in places like beaches and parks were highly concerning given that health services across the country are already under significant pressure.
"We must also remember that many older people who fall outside of the shielding group may be also be at risk or vulnerable, particularly those who live on their own and we must continue to protect and support them to ensure they can get the help they need to stay safe and well."
