New guide launched to help older people plan for their future
The Older People’s Commissioner for Wales has launched a new information guide in partnership with Aneurin Bevan University Health board that aims to help individuals maintain control and continue to be a part of decisions made about their care.
The Advance Care Planning (ACP) Guide provides information about how you can make plans for your future and includes a wide range of information on aspects of ACP such as lasting power of attorney, organ donation, preparing an advance care statement and writing a last will and testament.
Discussing the guide, Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Heléna Herklots CBE, said:
“Sharing your wishes and preferences for the future with your family, friends and health and social care professionals is essential to help you and the people close to you understand what is important for your future, even if your health deteriorates and your capacity to make decisions is lost.
“Advance Care Planning ensures that your wishes and preferences are respected and that your voice and opinions continue to be heard, even if you are unable to speak for yourself.”
The ACP Guide was launched at an event in Newport Community House on Tuesday 29 October where the Commissioner was joined by a number of health and social care professionals to discuss the importance of Advance Care Planning.
Speakers at the launch included Christine Fretwell and Dr Aoife Gleeson from Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s Advance Care Planning Team, and Stuart Nixon MBE, an ambassador for MS Society who talked about his own experiences in putting together an Advance Care Plan.
Christine Fretwell, Advance Care Planning Facilitator said,
“We are delighted to have worked in partnership to produce this empowering ACP booklet. Thanks to everyone who has been involved in the development and to the inspiring speakers at the launch.”
