Commissioner welcomes Public Accounts Committee Inquiry into mental health services in north Wales
Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Heléna Herklots CBE, said:
“I welcome the announcement that the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee will be undertaking an Inquiry into mental health services in north Wales, taking evidence from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and the Welsh Government.
“The Inquiry will provide an important opportunity for Committee Members to scrutinise the action that has been taken to address the unacceptable failings which led to the closure of the Tawel Fan ward in 2013.
“I look forward to reading the Committee’s report, which I hope will provide assurances that effective action has been taken and that effective governance systems are now in place to prevent similar failings from occurring again.
“However, should the Committee identify that further action is required, I expect the Health Board and the Welsh Government to act swiftly to deliver the change required so that older people in north Wales who need support from mental health services are able to access the highest standards of care and support.”
