Commissioner strongly welcomes support for crimes against older people to be recognised as hate crimes

Responding to yesterday’s Senedd debate on hate crime, which saw Assembly Members support calls for crimes against older people to be recognised as hate crimes, Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Sarah Rochira, said:

“I strongly welcome that the National Assembly for Wales has today unanimously supported calls for crimes committed against older people because of their age to be recognised as hate crimes.

“Older people are often targeted by criminals specifically due to their potential vulnerabilities and I have been clear that it is simply not acceptable that current legislation does not recognise these crimes as hate crimes and does not offer older people the same protection as other groups with protected characteristics.

“Whilst justice remains a non-devolved matter, today’s debate has renewed the focus on a vital issue for older people in Wales and I look forward to working with Assembly Members and Welsh Ministers to examine the ways in which this unacceptable gap in the law can be addressed.”
