What We Do And How We Do It
The Commissioner's role is to ensure that the interests of older
people in Wales, who are aged 60 or more, are safeguarded and promoted. The Commissioner provides strategic leadership and acts as an ambassador and authority
on older people’s issues, speaking up on their behalf.
The Commissioner:
- Provides information, advocacy and support for older people in Wales who are aged 60 or more
- Promotes the rights and welfare of older people throughout Wales
- Promotes the provision of opportunities for, and the elimination of discrimination against, older people in Wales
- Reviews the adequacy and effectiveness of law, policy and strategy affecting the interests of older people in Wales
- Reviews and monitors the operation of complaints, advocacy, advice and whistle
blowing arrangements to ascertain whether and to what extent Wales is
effective in safeguarding and promoting the rights and welfare of older
people
- Reports annually to the First Minister on how we have carried out our responsibilities
The Commissioner achieves these aims by:
- Providing an enquiries service through which older people in Wales can raise issues that concern them (Details of how to Contact Us)
- Listening to the concerns of older people through correspondence, focus groups, meetings, conferences and community events
- Organising
physical mail-outs to the homes of older people in Wales which raise
awareness of such things as the workings of the benefits system and ways
to heat your home more effectively
- Meeting with Assembly Ministers and other Government officials to raise issues brought up by older people
- Lobbying the Welsh Assembly to make policy changes based on the concerns of older people
- Commenting on and highlighting issues that affect older people in Wales through our website and the media
- Attending events such as the Royal Welsh Show and the Eisteddfod to raise awareness of issues facing older people in Wales
